Breaking Foundations – 6-Week Introduction to the Art of Break dancing

Program Description:
This six-week program introduces participants to the art of Breaking (commonly known as breakdancing), a cultural pillar of hip-hop. Students will learn the history, foundations, and physical elements of Breaking while developing self-expression, creativity, discipline, and teamwork. The program will conclude with a student showcase where participants share what they’ve learned with family and peers.

Participants & Location: 
This program is open to anyone 10 years of age and up and will be held at Page Park Ski Lodge (next to the playground) at 649 King Street, Bristol, CT 06010, on Mondays from January 12 - Feb 16, 5:30-7PM (snow and rain dates on Tuesdays unless otherwise noted by the instructor). 

Program Structure (6 Weeks):

Week 1 – Introduction to Breaking & History
• Warm-ups, stretching, and injury prevention.
• Overview of Breaking’s 4 core elements: Top Rock, Footwork, Power, Freezes.
• Cultural context: the origins of Breaking and how it has impacted the world.
• Instructor introduction and personal journey through dance.

Week 2 – Foundations, Part 1
• Basic Top Rock (standing dance).
• Introductory Footwork (ground moves).
• Focus on rhythm, flow, and confidence in movement.

Week 3 – Foundations, Part 2
• Review of Week 2 material.
• Introduction to beginner Power moves (Backspin, Windmill progressions, Turtles).
• Introduction to beginner Freezes (Baby Freeze, Chair Freeze).

Week 4 – Acrobatics & Dynamic Movement
• Safe introduction to rolls, kip-ups, and cartwheel variations.
• Exploration of controlled acrobatic movements.
• (Note: No flips will be taught for safety reasons unless approved and requested.)

Week 5 – Building Sets & Choreography
• Review and polish of learned vocabulary.
• Creative exercises: combining movements into short sets.
• Partner/group work to build teamwork and confidence.

Week 6 – Showcase & Celebration
• Rehearsal and refinement of routines.
• Final showcase performance for parents and peers.
• Recognition of student progress and achievements.
